Torres de Serranos (Porta dels Serrans)

Torres de Serranos (Porta dels Serrans)

Valencia (Spain)

Description

The towers formed part of the defensive Christian Wall of the city of Valencia. This gate was designed by the architect Pere Balaguer around 1392 and the work was completed around 1398 with some modifications to the initial design.

The towers were turned into a prison for knights and the nobility from 1586 to 1887. It was later used for different purposes and for a wide range of official ceremonies, and as a museum.

During the Spanish Civil War, its structure was reinforced to serve as storage and protection for numerous works of art from the Prado Museum and other collections, in an operation carried out by the Junta Central de Salvamento del Tesoro Artístico (Central Board for the Safeguarding of Artistic Treasures).
