In 1501, the Aljama Mosque was turned into a church, transforming the old building. In 1705, Archbishop Martín de Azcalgorta commissioned Francisco Hurtado Izquierdo, who had already been master builder of Cordoba Cathedral, to carry out a new building keeping with the magnificence of the Cathedral. The building was constructed between 1705 and 1759.
