Fernando Valenzuela

Description

Fernando Valenzuela y Enciso (1636-1692) was Charles II's valide and wielded great power in the first part of his reign. On December 15, 1676, a group of Grandes de España signed a manifesto with demands to the king and within a few days a nobiliary league was formed with the aim of having Juan José de Austria replace Valenzuela in the government. Valenzuela was arrested in the Monastery of El Escorial and imprisoned in the castle of Consuegra. His properties were requisioned and ordered his exile to the Philippines for ten years and then to Mexico where he died in 1692.
