Collection of the 7 dukes of Montalto

Madrid (Spain)

Description

Luis Guillén de Moncada, 7 duke of Montalto (Palermo, Italia, 1-1-1614, Madrid, 4-5-1672). Biography by R. Pilo Gallisai in RAH.

In 1629 he married María Afán de Ribera y Moura, daughter of the then viceroy and captain general of the kingdom of Naples, Fernando Enríquez de Ribera, III Duke of Alcalá. He developed important positions in Sicily at the service of the Catholic Monarchy, and already widowed, he lived for a time in Rome where he strengthened his friendship with his brother-in-law, the Marquis of Castel Rodrigo, ambassador of Spain near the Holy See.

Then he spent some time in Madrid where Philip IV and the Count Duke proposed him marriage with Catalina Moncada de Castro, orphan of the Marquis of Aytona, and lady of the Queen Isabel de Borbón. Their son, Fernando de Aragón Moncada, VIII Duke of Montalto, was born in Madrid in 1644.

After a brilliant period as viceroy and captain general of Sardinia (1644-1649) and later of Valencia (1652-1658) he returned to Madrid, renouncing other missions abroad that could take him away from his relevant influence at the court of the queen regent Mariana of Austria. In 1667 he was named cardinal.

During his stay in Madrid he rented several houses for himself and his entourage. The first one near the convent of La Merced, which soon required another space for stables and employees on Calle de la Espada. In 1662 his position gave him the right to a room in the Alcazar. However, that same year he rented a house with a garden on Barquillo Street. In 1664 he moved to the castle of Odón on the outskirts of Madrid. There is also reference of renting in Palacio street and he takes care of the decoration of his rooms in the Alcazar. In 1668 he rents another important residence in Santa Isabel Street, with nearby dwellings for his entourage. In 1669 he rents a residence near the church of san Nicolás (Halcón and Herrera, 2016, pp. 132-133). It is also probable that at some period they used the palace of La Florida owned by the Marquis of Castel Rodrigo.

The goods of their house in Madrid are recorded in the inventories of Catalina Moncada de Castro (1662) and Guillermo Moncada-Aragón y la Cerda (1672).
