Church of San Gines

Church of San Gines

Madrid (Spain)

Description

The current Parish of San Ginés was consecrated in 1645, once the new temple finished after the fire occured in 1641. It was designed by Friar Lorenzo de San Nicolás and built by the alarife Juan Ruiz. Located on Arenal Street, it constitues a major historic-artistic complex in Madrid, including the paintings and sculptures inside. In the middle of the 18th century, Juan the Villanueva transformed its interior to the neoclassical look that retains today. The Church has Flemish works by Peter van Lint, Gerard Seghers, and Michiel Coxcie, as well as Spanish paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries, such as Alonso Cano, Antonio de Pereda, El Greco, José Antolínez, Antonio Palomino and Corrado Giaquinto, among others.
