The altarpiece was commissioned by a family of merchants from Castrojeriz, the Gallo, a branch of whose family had settled in Bruges. Their coat of arms appears at the top of the altarpiece. It was therefore probably painted in Bruges in the 1540s by a disciple of Ambrosius Benson.
