This oil on canvas, dated from the 17^th century, depicts a Lamentation over the dead Christ, following the model of Anthony van Dyck. The closest composition attributed to the master, and dated 1634, can be found at the Alte Pinakothek in Munich (inv. 606).

According to Díaz Padrón, two versions of this composition existed in the Colección de la duquesa de Santamarca. It is however not possible to link with certainty the present painting, known through an old photograph in the Spanish archives (IPCE, Archivo Moreno 04228_C), to one of the two versions listed. The current location of the painting is unknown, as it doesn’t appear in the collection’s catalogue from 2017.
