House of Canon Diego Girón de Rebolledo in Mercaders street

Barcelona (Spain)

Description

Son of a noble family of Castilian origin settled in the city of Tarragona in the middle of the 15th century and later moved to Barcelona. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries they acquired numerous properties in nearby towns in the Camp de Tarragona (Riudecols, les Irles).

In 1627 he was named coadjutor of the priory of the cathedral of Tarragona. He joined the cathedral chapter in 1631 and held the positions of archivist (1632), auditor of accounts (1634) and syndic (1635). However, he usually resided in Barcelona. From this city he represented the Chapter of Tarragona and managed various matters, especially those related to the Crown before the viceroy of Catalonia. When the War of the Reapers broke out (1640-1652), Girón de Rebolledo remained in Barcelona at the head of a group of Tarragona canons who were supporters of the Generality of Catalonia and therefore opposed to King Philip IV. From Barcelona, Girón de Rebolledo acted as vicar general of the archbishopric of Tarragona, collecting rents and publishing edicts. This attitude directly confronted him with the canons who were supporters of King Philip IV residing in Tarragona and especially with the vicar general, Miguel Aguiló, and the archbishop-elect Pau Durán.

From 1645 he was forbidden to act as vicar general. When the war ended (1652), he was subjected to an internal process in which he had to publicly retract his previous actions against the King. He returned to Tarragona, his revenues were seized and he remained for several years without holding any capitular office. Later he recovered his good name and the confidence of several archbishops, who appointed him their procurator to present the papal appointment bulls before the Chapter.

At his death, he bequeathed to the Chapter his considerable properties, and especially a splendid collection of Flemish tapestries, which are still preserved today in the Diocesan Museum. In addition, he bequeathed the necessary funds to continue the construction works, initiated by him, in the Tarragona church of a chapel dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. This chapel preserves the tomb of the benefactor canon.

Biography by Antonio Jordà i Fernández in RAH
