The Marquis of Villena and Master of the Order of Santiago, Don Juan Pacheco (1419-1474), commissioned the building of the church of Belmonte on the foundations of a pre-existing Visigothic church. At his request, Pope Pius II erected the parish of Belmonte as a collegiate church in 1459.
The works were carried out over the next four centuries with the participation of the most important masters to be found in Castile. The noble families of Belmonte built side chapels in the church and decorated it magnificently. In the 18th century, the chapter of the collegiate church acquired the choir stalls of the cathedral of Cuenca, which is probably the oldest historical stalls in Spain.
