Old Church of Santa María de Gracia

Cuenca (Spain)

Description

Disappeared church. It was founded at the beginning of the 15th century on the remains of the old Jewish synagogue and was called Santa María la Nueva, later renamed Santa María de Gracia. The building had a single rectangular nave, masonry walls with pilasters supporting the roof, side chapels and an attached tower.
The coffered ceiling that covered the original building lasted until 1734, when it was replaced by a plaster barrel vault with lunettes, and the entire body of the church was whitewashed.
In 1875, the parish church was declared extinct. In 1912 it was ordered to be demolished on the grounds that it was threatened with ruin. Today, the remains of some of its walls and paving can still be seen.
