Museo Diocesano

Cuenca (Spain)

Description

The Diocesan Museum of Cuenca was inaugurated on 23rd May 1983, installed in the ground floor of the Episcopal Palace of Cuenca.

In 1999 the Diocesan Museum was remodelled to provide a new entrance through the Renaissance courtyard of the Episcopal Palace. This led to the dispersion of the collection of carpets and tapestries. Some of them went to occupy other rooms in the Cathedral while waiting for a suitable place to be exhibited.

In 2012, a new remodelling of the museum recovered the first entrance for visitors and the carpet room was re-established as an exhibition space. Although the size of the tapestries made it difficult to maintain the unity of the sets, the three series of tapestries that are currently part of the collection were preserved for exhibition. Most of them are exhibited in the Diocesan Museum and some in the Cathedral.
